Wax worms are a soft-bodied moth
larva that is white in color which attracts most animals to it. The taste keeps
your reptiles coming back. High in fat, wax worms should be considered treats
and not part of your animal's staple diet. Other then the high fat content, wax
worms are very nutritionally complete. Wax worms cannot be gut loaded but
should still be dusted with calcium and vitamins. Wax worms must be kept cold.
If kept cold and dry, wax worms can last up to a month. As a general rule of
thumb aim to keep no more then you can use in 2-3 weeks. Store wax worms in a
refrigerator at 5-10 C and keep them dry. If their substrate becomes damp
change it with any organic absorbent such as oatmeal, wheat bran or corn meal.
The wax worms will not eat this. It is just to help keep them dry. Dispose of
any damp substrate and do not
use it as a gut load. Moisture can lead to mould which can be linked to many problems and deaths in otherwise
healthy animals.
